What’s a Scrutiny?

This weekend the adults preparing to celebrate their Sacraments at Easter – the RCIA Elect – are participating in the first of 3 Scrutinies this Lent. But what are they? The Scrutinies invite the Elect and all of us to open the eyes of our hearts and souls, so we can see what is truly good. We & the Elect are invited to look inward to see how sin works in our own lives, in order to turn away from it, and walk into the light of Christ. The masses with Scrutinies always use readings from the A Cycle of the Lectionary.

First Scrutiny

Today the Elect in RCIA participate in the First Scrutiny. In the Gospel the Woman at the Well meets Jesus and He tells us He is the living water. This echoes the beginning of each Elect’s journey of faith. They had an experience of God that spurred them takes steps toward new life and to go out and tell others about it. Join us in prayer and reflection with the readings for the First Scrutiny.
